Social Return on Investment (SROI) is a framework for measuring the social, environmental, and economic value created by an initiative relative to the resources invested - it expresses social value per unit of investment.

  1. Identify inputs - resources invested (money, time, assets).
  2. Map outcomes - intended and unintended changes for stakeholders.
  3. Assign monetary values - estimate financial equivalents for social outcomes.
  4. Adjust for impact factors - deadweight, attribution, and drop-off.
  5. Calculate net impact - subtract inputs from total valued outcomes.
  6. Compute the ratio.
SROI = Total Present Value of Benefits ÷ Total Investment
